Russia Part 2

Problems of the Soviet Economy:

+Agriculture in 1928

  • Agricultural production was too low to feed everyone.
  • Kulaks owned 98% of the land and the rest was either rented or owned by the peasants.
  • Land over-farmed and soil was too poor and seldom-fertilized or cared for, which resulted in low yields or crops.
  • Farming and technology was backwards and most farmers were using wooden spades and hoes.(old-school)

àTherefore, this resulted in why 5-year plan needs to be established under agriculture. It is to improve economy as well as to feed the hungry. A lot of people are affected in this because there were no feed to eat. Rice cultivation was low and most of them lands were owned by the Kulaks who owned 98% of the land. Collectivization was introduced, however, not everyone approved of it.

+Industry in 1928

  • Large size of country and moving of resources and goods were hard.
  • Few roads and railways, and very far between and it was not efficiently maintained.
  • World war1 and civil war had disrupted industrial productions .Factories, mines, roads and railways were all damaged.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk had given away land that had both factories and resources such as coal mine.

àTherefore, 5 year plans was introduced in Russia by Stalin because something was needed to be done to improve the country's well-being. Old industries were re-developed, new industrial towns sprang up and within ten years the USSR had become a key industrial power. The 5-year plans for Industrial was set up for industrial production and, power supply and transport.
